Hermopolis Magna Creation Myth
Out of the mists of creation, the essential elements gathered
and formed into four pairs of opposing forces, male and female:
-
Primodial water (Nun and Naunet);
-
Air or Hidden Power (Amun and Amaunet);
-
Darkness (Kuk and Kauket); and
-
flood force or formlessness (Huh and Hauhet).
These form the Ogdoad (group of eight, in Egyptian, Khmun).
Male gods were frog headed and the goddesses were snakeheaded.
These eight elements combined to explode into a creation
force causing a mound of earth called the Isle of Flame to rise up in
the primordial waters.
The god Thoth, in the form on an ibis, placed a cosmic
egg on the mound of earth. The egg hatched and the sun rose into the sky.
